Since the late 1950s, Chinese table tennis began to emerge on the international stage. The third World Table Tennis Championships held in Beijing in 1959 marked the key milestone of China’s first appearance on the global competitive arena. This paper adopts a chronological structure to outline 12 milestones from that time to 2023, illustrating the sport’s developmental trajectory and academic significance in international competitions. The first major milestone was the 1959 World Championships when Chinese men’s singles player Zhang Yiming won the country’s first gold medal, signifying a breakthrough in Chinese table tennis technique and international competitiveness. Subsequently, China’s coaching team established the nation’s image as a “table tennis powerhouse” through systematic training methods. The second milestone occurred between 1961 and 1972, as China’s engagement with the outside world deepened and table tennis became a bridge for sports diplomacy. At the 1972 Munich Olympics, although table tennis was not an official sport, friendly matches between Chinese and foreign players sparked greater interest in the discipline. The third major milestone was the inclusion of table tennis in the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics. Following that, Chinese athletes dominated both the Olympics and World Championships, establishing a “reign of consecutive champions.” From 2000 to 2008, multiple domestic and international teams rose, intensifying competition and driving continuous innovation in technique and tactics. The latest milestone is the 2023 ITTF World Championships, where Chen Meng and Fan Zhendong captured the women’s and men’s singles titles respectively, showcasing China’s comprehensive superiority across technical, physical, and psychological dimensions. This event not only solidified China’s hegemonic position in global table tennis but also provided a sustainable model for future young athletes. Against this backdrop, researchers should delve into the intersection of cross‑cultural dissemination and technical evolution in table tennis to further deepen the field of sports history.
